Agra is a city with a rich historical background and a strong cultural heritage. History of Agra

Although it is widely accepted that Agra was an ancient city from the time of the Mahabharata, Sultan Sikandar Lodi, the Muslim ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, founded Agra in 1504. Following the Sultan’s death, the city was passed down to his son, Sultan Ibrahim Lodi. He ruled his Sultanate from Agra until he was defeated in the First Battle of Panipat in 1526 by Mughal Badshah (emperor) Babur.

With Babur on the throne, the influence of Islam steadily increased in the city, having a significant impact on Agra’s history. When Babur died in 1530, he was succeeded by his son, Humayun. Sher Shah Suri, an Afghan ruler, briefly interrupted the rule by defeating Humayun and taking control of the city. Humayun reclaimed the throne of Agra from Sher Shah Suri, and was succeeded by his son Akbar in 1558. Mughal architecture rose to prominence in Agra during Akbar’s reign.

Akbar ruled Agra for more than four decades, during which time he built Fatehpur Sikri, a new city a few kilometres ahead of Agra. The Mughals ushered in the city’s golden age. It was known as Akbarabad at the time and served as the capital of the Mughal Empire under the Badshah (emperors) Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan. Akbar named it after one of his original twelve subahs (imperial top-level provinces), which bordered (Old) Delhi, Awadh (Oudh), Allahabad, Malwa, and Ajmer. Shah Jahan later relocated his capital to Shahajahanabad in 1649.Taj Mahal was built by Shah Jahan and is one of the seven wonders of the world.  Following the decline of the Mughal Empire, the city was renamed Agra and came under the control of the Marathas before falling into the hands of the British Raj in 1803.

Agra became a part of Uttar Pradesh after India’s independence and gradually developed into an industrial town. The city is now a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world who come to see its legendary monuments, some of which are essential UNESCO world heritage sites. The Taj Mahal attracts a large number of tourists, photographers, historians, and archaeologists throughout the year.
